Hello
While CCN provides psychological first aid for survivors of workplace tragedies swiftly and effectively, we recognize that the healing process doesn’t end when the Crisis Response Specialist leaves. For many, triage back to adaptive functioning is quickly indicated. For others, it is just the beginning. Recovery from a significant trauma takes many paths and follows its own time frame. There is no “one right way” to facilitate resilience. The resources we have researched for this edition of Practice Points capture many of the essential skills and concepts useful to individuals and organizations as they seek a “New Normal” after a critical incident. Whether it is Survivor Guilt after a layoff, facing the enormity of a Mass Disaster, or coping with a more localized event, we are confident that this information will be useful to business leaders, EAP Professionals, and clinicians alike who are called to offer a compassionate and competent response to tragedy. By casting a clear vision of hope and coupling it with achievable action steps, the long-term recovery trajectory of an impacted organization can be enhanced.
Best!

Bob VandePol, President

This insightful article explores the concept of survivor guilt in this unique context and offers some helpful tips for support. To view the article click Survivor Guilt.

CCN Efficacy Touted at Disability Management Employer Coalition (DMEC) Conference
Family Dollar Stores VP of Risk Management David Smith and Behavioral Medical Interventions VP Kate Harri co-presented a workshop describing how a continuum of services to employees impacted by retail robberies significantly reduced the human and financial costs typically associated with such events. This continuum is characterized by an effective partnership between the employer, workers’ compensation carrier, CCN, and BMI and includes immediate delivery of psychological first aid by CCN followed as indicated with disability management services by BMI for that small percentage of employees who continued to experience difficulties. Mr. Smith described how this program had measurably reduced continued personal distress, employee attrition, and workers compensation claims per robbery.
